What is aquaculture? But first, the researchers reason there must have been a small human population turning to aquaculture — farming fish and other water animals like shrimp or clams. It differs from agriculture, which deals with the farming of plants and animals that live on land (e.g. cows, chickens for dairy mills; crops like your corns and wheats). But amazingly, these two types of farming can also work together in a very beneficial manner to give us delicious food. This co-operation is called as integrated aquaculture system.
An aquaculture system that combines fish and plants grown alongside each other, as they are in nature. The fish are central to this model, as they create waste which has nutrients that contribute to strong plant growth. The plants also help to clean the water for fish by filtration at the same time. It is like a family that lives together happily! This innovative design uses significantly less water and fertilizer of the conventional farming scenario which makes it gainful to nourish every one.
Integrated aquaculture, in fact are also termed as smart or the wise use of water and land to maximize resource efficiency. They create less waste since the fish and plants grow in harmony. As the fish produce waste it acts as a food for the plants and as they filter out to clean water from all those dirty wastages produced by fishes. It is ideal teamwork in which all can enjoy the benefits!
Almost all traditional farming practices can wreck havoc on the environment. Farmers tend to raze large areas of land or use noxious pesticides and fertilizers for growing crops. It causes soil erosion, or the transportation (both natural and human-induced) of soils from one place to another by water or wind. It can also lead to pollution rivers and lakes. And yet integrated aquaculture farming is an approach that safeguards our ecosystems.

For all the wrong reasons, food security is an issue of concern to a lot people in many parts of the world. This involves getting every human to a bare minimum of food. Combining the two via aquaponics also has huge benefits for food security domestically. And, in a system called aquaponics (which we'll get to in another post), farmers can cultivate fish and crops together: more food on less land—vital as the world population grows.

They also improve food access for the countless communities they serve. For instance, there are still significant populations in isolated areas who have no direct access to fruits and vegetables or even fish. A truly sustainable global local food system would utilize the best of these approaches in balance so that more people could eat well.

Thankfully, technology continues to advance and improve how we can cultivate more sustainable integrated aquaculture systems. Farmers are always looking for new and easier ways to operate such systems. Others are deploying sensors to maintain the polution of their water in control so as to protect the fishes for living. Some have resorted to using automation to help facilitate feeding the fish appropriately.
