Flow-Through Aquaculture System: Let the Water Flow, Watch the Fish Grow

A flow-through aquaculture system (FTS) is a farming model that relies on a continuous supply of fresh water to maintain a healthy growing environment and it remains one of the most widely adopted systems in global aquaculture today. Water enters the pond through an inlet pipe while effluent drains out simultaneously, creating a "flow in, flow out" dynamic cycle. The pond water stays fresh at all times, allowing fish to grow in a near-natural water environment.

The FTS delivers three core advantages. First, stable water quality. The constant flow carries away uneaten feed and waste, preventing ammonia and nitrite from accumulating, which significantly reduces the risk of disease. Second, abundant dissolved oxygen. Flowing water continuously replenishes oxygen, boosting feed intake and growth rates for higher yield per unit of water. Third, lower operating costs. Compared with recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), the FTS requires no mechanical filtration, biofilters, or other heavy water-treatment equipment. Both initial investment and daily electricity consumption are more economical, making it ideal for regions with abundant water sources.

A complete flow-through system typically consists of a water storage tank, inlet pipes, grow-out ponds, a drainage system, and an aeration unit. The pond itself is the heart of the system. We recommend a galvanized steel panel body lined with aquaculture-grade PVC corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, and long-lasting. Inlet and outlet pipes should be positioned in a staggered layout to eliminate dead zones, and bottom drains allow rapid removal of settled solids. For aeration, a blower paired with disc diffusers keeps dissolved oxygen at safe levels even during water interruptions or still periods, preventing fish from suffocating.

The FTS is especially suitable for high-yield species such as catfish and tilapia, and it fits perfectly for farmers with access to mountain streams, reservoirs, or well water.
