industrial aquaculture

Aquaculture may sound like a complex term, industrial aquaculture just denotes the farming of fish and other seafood items in big fleds or pools. The whole idea behind this procedure is to simply create more fish for the human population, globally. Still, it begs the question of where industrial aquaculture fits into our environment and if it's really all that good for us or our oceans...and we need to continue thinking about this.

Before I start deep diving into what industrial aquaculture is and how it affects the environment....

Industrial aquaculture is an effective way of mass producing fish in a short time period hence within very limited space. Rather than letting fish swim their way through the oceans or rivers, they are bred in large tanks, ponds (dyked enclosures) and even cages out into open bodies of water. Farmers feed the fish carefully, using health and hygienic ensure they can grow in good size full body structure. This has paved the way for sustaining high yield of fish to satiate seafood appetites around the globe.

Industrial aquaculture has its benefits, but also some disadvantages. Fish poop or the waste build-up can occur as a result of farming fish intensely in one place. This waste could pollute the ocean water around it, endangering other sea life and plants as well. The close confinement of fish in tanks or cages may further promote disease amongst the population.

Benefits and Costs of Industrial Aquaculture for Seafood Production

A key benefit of commercial aquaculture is the ability to harvest many fish in a small area very quickly. It promotes greater exploitation of seafood, which reduces dependence on wild fishing to the point of falling into practices that can lead certain species to extinction or depreciate our environment. In addition, aquaculture business and even industrial fish farming creates jobs for people working in related fields regarding running the farms or processing and packaging of the fishes.

There are, however, some cons of this practice as well. Disease outbreaks and/or localized water pollution are housed under concentrations of fish in one location. In addition, these farms can be sources of noise or smell nuisances for the surrounding neighborhood. In addition, the fish are occasionally fed expensive and unsustainable food taken from other species of fish or animals kept on land.
